Prolonged Gaza Conflict
TOKYO: In his first detailed remarks on the month-long Gaza conflict, U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Charles Q. Brown stressed the imperative of swiftly resolving the situation to mitigate civilian strife and deter potential recruitment into Palestinian militant ranks.
General Brown acknowledged the ambitious goal of Israel—complete destruction of the Hamas militant group—but highlighted the possibility of a quicker resolution by focusing on targeting the senior leadership.

Expressing concern about the escalating challenges with time, he warned that the longer the conflict persisted, the more difficult it might become.
Israel launched the offensive in response to an incursion on October 7, resulting in casualties and a humanitarian crisis.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres criticized the high civilian death toll, questioning the appropriateness of Israel’s military operations. Brown, who assumed the role of the top U.S. military officer a month ago, urged for a strategic and expeditious resolution to the prolonged Gaza conflict.
