Russian Forces
In a significant development in the ongoing conflict, Russian forces achieved a major territorial success by capturing the eastern city of Avdiivka last week. The city, once home to 30,000 civilians and Europe’s largest coking plant, now lies in ruins, raising doubts about its swift recovery. The capture serves as a propaganda boost for Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of the upcoming elections in March.
The prolonged conflict saw intense fighting over four months, with Ukraine’s Tavria forces sustaining heavy casualties and losing significant military assets. The fall of Avdiivka prompted Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba to declare, “The era of peace in Europe is over,” at the Munich Security Conference, where a somber outlook for 2024 was discussed.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy seized the moment to appeal for increased weapon supplies from allies, blaming the United States for delayed military assistance. The $60.6 billion military aid package for Ukraine remains stalled in Congress, and many Ukrainians see the delays as emboldening Russia.
The key to Russia’s success in breaking the months-long impasse appears to be temporary air superiority. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu revealed that Moscow’s forces executed 450 high-precision air strikes, primarily using glide bombs. However, Ukraine managed to shoot down several Russian aircraft during the offensive.
As Ukraine grapples with the loss of Avdiivka, international support has seen a positive surge. Denmark’s Prime Minister pledged all remaining artillery assets to Ukraine, and France and Germany committed to leading an air coalition to supply Ukraine with drones.
Additionally, Germany and Ukraine signed a multi-year defense cooperation agreement, and NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg announced the opening of a training center for Ukrainian personnel in Poland.
Despite these gestures, questions linger about Russia’s ability to replicate its success in other areas of the front, while Avdiivka’s strategic importance for further Russian advances remains uncertain.
