The United Kingdom has decided to provide Ukraine anti-tank weapons while Canada sending its special forces to Kyiv amid concerns of a possible invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
The developments surfaced soon after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov rejected claims by the United States that Moscow was getting ready to invade Ukraine.
Moscow has deployed 100,000 troops near its border with Ukraine, but Russians have denied plans for an attack against Ukraine. Russia views NATO’s expansion eastwards as an existential threat.
Washington and its allies have rejected Moscow’s demands and Russia-US negotiations in Geneva and a related NATO-Russia meeting in Brussels ended without a breakthrough. Ukraine has since asked Western nations for arms to help it protect itself.
Addressing the British parliament today, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said the UK was providing Ukraine light anti-armour defensive weapon systems.
The first weaponry was delivered on Monday and a small number of British personnel would provide training for a short period of time, he said, without specifying the number and type of weapons that were being sent.
