UAE Leads the Arab World with Completion of First Nuclear Power Plant

First Nuclear Power Plant

The United Arab Emirates (UAE), a nation renowned for its vast oil reserves, has achieved a historic milestone by announcing the completion of the Arab world’s first nuclear power plant.

Describing this development as a “significant step,” the UAE government emphasized its commitment to diversifying its energy sources.

The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, situated in Abu Dhabi, is set to produce 40 terawatt-hours of electricity annually once all four of its reactors are fully operational.

This output is expected to meet 25 percent of the electricity demand in the UAE, a country where air-conditioning is a necessity due to its hot desert climate. According to the state-owned Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), this level of energy production is nearly equivalent to the total annual electricity consumption of New Zealand.

The plant is expected to power major Emirati companies, including the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), which ranks among the world’s largest oil producers, as well as Emirates Steel and Emirates Global Aluminium.

Named “Barakah,” meaning “blessing” in Arabic, the nuclear facility began its journey in 2020 when the first of its four reactors became operational. The completion of the plant marks a key achievement for the UAE in its pursuit of clean energy.

Emirati President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan celebrated this progress, calling it a “significant step on the journey towards net zero.” He reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to prioritizing energy security and sustainability for both present and future generations in a post on the social media platform X.

While the UAE has been clear that its nuclear ambitions are solely for peaceful purposes, it has ruled out any plans to develop uranium enrichment or nuclear reprocessing technologies.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has noted that the Barakah plant will need to be decommissioned after a lifespan of approximately 60 to 80 years.

Although the UAE is one of the largest oil producers within the OPEC cartel, it has been investing heavily in renewable energy sources. The country aims to meet half of its energy needs with renewable sources by 2050.

Alongside nuclear power, the UAE has established one of the world’s largest solar plants outside of Abu Dhabi and continues to rely on gas-powered stations for a significant portion of its electricity needs.

Last year, the UAE hosted the COP28 UN climate talks, which led to a global agreement on the need to “transition away” from fossil fuels.

Across the Gulf, Iran has also developed nuclear capabilities, with a Russian-built nuclear power plant located in Bushehr and a contentious uranium enrichment program. However, unlike Iran, the UAE has repeatedly emphasized the peaceful nature of its nuclear energy strategy.

The UAE’s nuclear energy ambitions are seen as part of a broader regional trend. Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil exporter, has also announced plans to develop nuclear reactors.

As these developments unfold, the completion of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant stands as a landmark achievement for the UAE and the wider Arab world, signaling a shift toward cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions in the region.
