Trump
Donald Trump is set to make history by being sworn in for a second term as the President of the United States on Monday, January 20, 2025. The inauguration will mark a dramatic and unprecedented political comeback for the former president, promising a new “golden age” for America.
Despite the freezing weather conditions, the ceremony in Washington has been moved indoors, where the inauguration will take place inside the Capitol Rotunda, in a setting reminiscent of Ronald Reagan’s 1985 ceremony.
Trump, 78 years old, will become the oldest president in U.S. history to take office, surpassing his previous record set in 2017. He is only the second president in U.S. history to return to office after losing re-election, following Grover Cleveland’s return in 1893.
As the 47th president, Trump is expected to immediately begin undoing many of the policies set by his predecessor, President Joe Biden.
In his first hours in office, he intends to issue a series of executive orders, aimed at reversing Biden’s policies, including the deportation of undocumented migrants and rolling back measures relating to diversity and oil drilling.
Trump’s inauguration has stirred mixed reactions. His supporters eagerly anticipate his promises to restore America’s greatness and tackle what he refers to as the “invasion of our borders” and “woke policies.”
On the eve of the inauguration, Trump told his supporters that he would act swiftly and forcefully to address the nation’s crises. However, many are concerned about his potential retribution against political opponents, particularly those linked to the events of January 6, 2021, when Trump’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Trump has vowed to pardon many of the rioters.
Meanwhile, Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will host Trump and his wife Melania at the White House for a brief meeting, before all four travel to the Capitol together for the ceremony. This moment of civility stands in stark contrast to Trump’s refusal to attend Biden’s inauguration in 2021, following the controversy surrounding the 2020 election.
Trump’s return to power has profound implications not only for the U.S. but for the global order. Known for his unpredictable leadership style, Trump’s second term could include sweeping tariffs, territorial disputes, and shifting international alliances, particularly concerning U.S. support for Ukraine.
His victory has also bolstered right-wing leaders worldwide, with Italy’s far-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni planning to attend the inauguration, despite foreign leaders typically not being invited.
Trump’s supporters remain hopeful that his leadership will restore American prosperity, while critics fear the continuation of policies that could divide the nation further. The world watches with bated breath as Trump embarks on what many are calling the most extraordinary political comeback in modern history.
