BRUSSELS: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Vice-President Joseph Borrell have expressed their commitment to addressing the severe human rights violations in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). They acknowledged the concerns raised by members of the European Parliament. They assured that the issue would be brought up with the Indian government in the near future.
In a letter addressed to lawmakers, von der Leyen and Borrell emphasized the importance of negotiations concerning human rights in occupied Kashmir. They specifically underscored the necessity for discussions on human rights violations.

The letter highlighted that the EU is a key partner in a dedicated human rights dialogue with India. This dialogue addresses a wide range of human rights issues, including security and human rights matters in Jammu and Kashmir. The dialogue also addresses individual cases, such as that of Khurram Parvez, a Kashmiri human rights activist.
The letter affirmed the EU’s consistent stance on Kashmir. It reiterated the organization’s encouragement for India and Pakistan to find a lasting resolution to the Kashmir situation through positive dialogue. They emphasized the importance of involving the Kashmiri people on both sides of the Line of Control in this process.
