Time Magazine Selects Donald Trump as Person of the Year for 2024

Donald Trump

Time Magazine has named Donald Trump its “Person of the Year” for the second time, recognizing his remarkable political comeback.

The U.S. President-elect, who triumphed over Vice President Kamala Harris in the November 5 election, appears on the magazine’s cover, showcasing his signature red tie and a thoughtful expression.

Time’s editor-in-chief, Sam Jacobs, explained that Trump was chosen for his “historic” political resurgence, reshaping the American presidency and driving a significant political realignment.

The magazine highlighted his influence on both American politics and the country’s role on the global stage. Trump’s return to the White House is significant, especially after facing several challenges in 2024, including a conviction on business fraud charges and surviving two assassination attempts. Despite these setbacks, he is poised to take office with Republican majorities in Congress.

Time’s statement emphasized the broader political shifts Trump represents, noting a rise in populism, increasing distrust in traditional institutions, and a growing skepticism about the effectiveness of liberal values.

Trump, the magazine stated, is both an agent and beneficiary of these changes. The “Person of the Year” award is a recognition of an individual who has had a profound impact on the events of the year, and past recipients have included influential figures like Taylor Swift and Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump also earned this title in 2016 following his unexpected victory over Hillary Clinton.

In 2024, Trump’s influence remained significant, particularly in his policy promises, which included mass expulsions of undocumented immigrants and aggressive tariffs that could disrupt both the U.S. economy and international trade.

His stance on Ukraine and his relationship with foreign leaders further solidified his role in global politics.

Trump’s resurgence, from the chaos following the 2020 election to his eventual return to power, seemed unimaginable just a few years ago.

After the Capitol riot and numerous legal challenges, many believed his political career was over. Yet, he managed to regain control of the Republican Party and win the presidency in a dramatic comeback.

Other notable figures shortlisted for the award included Kamala Harris, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Russian economist Yulia Navalnaya, widow of the late Alexei Navalny.

The nomination of Netanyahu, however, has sparked criticism due to the ongoing violence in Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of thousands of Palestinians.
