At least three Iranian policemen were killed in separate attacks by militants and gunmen in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan, state media reported on Monday. Sistan-Baluchistan, which borders Pakistan, is one of Iran’s most impoverished regions and has long been troubled by instability. This unrest often involves drug trafficking gangs, insurgents from the Baluchi ethnic minority, and extremist groups.
According to Iran’s official news agency, IRNA, one of the border guards lost his life during a confrontation with armed militants in the Hirmand region of Sistan-Baluchistan. Another attack targeted law enforcement in the same province, killing a second border guard and wounding two others.
In a third incident, a member of the police special forces was killed in the town of Khash, also within the Sistan-Baluchistan province.
Jaish al-Adl, a militant group that has carried out several attacks in recent months, claimed responsibility for both the second and third assaults. The group made its claim via a message on the Telegram platform. Just a day earlier, on Sunday, they had also taken responsibility for an attack that resulted in the death of another policeman in the same region.
Sistan-Baluchistan continues to experience violence and unrest, with militants regularly targeting Iranian security forces, adding to the challenges faced by the Iranian government in maintaining stability in this volatile region.
