According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (Georgia DNR), about 20 individuals fell into the water when the structure gave way on Saturday.

The incident prompted an immediate response from various state and local emergency agencies. Boats and helicopters were deployed to conduct search and rescue operations in the aftermath of the collapse.

Georgia DNR has confirmed that the gangway was secured and is currently under investigation to determine the cause of the incident.

In a statement, President Joe Biden expressed his sorrow over the tragedy, stating, “We are heartbroken to learn about the ferry dock walkway collapse on Georgia’s Sapelo Island.” He mentioned that his administration is in contact with state and local officials and is prepared to offer any necessary assistance to the affected community.
