Saudi Arabia to Invest $25 Billion in Pakistan Over 2-5 Years, Says Interim PM Kakar

ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar announced that Saudi Arabia and the Middle East would invest $25 billion each in various projects over the next two to five years.

While speaking to foreign journalists at his office, the prime minister emphasized that his government’s primary focus is on restructuring fiscal and monetary policies to lay the foundation for economic recovery, rather than redesigning the government structure.

He described the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) as a key strategy for revitalizing the economy, with a particular focus on agriculture, mining, minerals, defense production, and information technology.

In response to a question, PM Kakar stated that his interim government maintains an excellent working relationship with the military, and they are collaboratively working on economic revitalization efforts.

Regarding the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), Caretaker PM Kakar asserted that the people of Balochistan, irrespective of their political affiliations, welcome the projects initiated under this initiative. He reiterated the government’s commitment to taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of Chinese workers involved in CPEC projects.

Addressing the substantial reserves of copper and gold worth $6 trillion in Balochistan, the prime minister announced that the Reko Diq project is set to commence soon. He called upon all stakeholders to develop a model for exploring this mineral-rich area, aiming to present Pakistan to the world in a different light.

Innovative Electricity Solutions

In the meeting, the premier assured that his government is actively seeking innovative solutions for electricity relief, while upholding international commitments. He addressed circular debt, power theft, and taxation, emphasizing short-term solutions without undermining public concerns.

The caretaker prime minister stressed the need for reforms in taxation and the power sector, focusing on groundwork for mid-level reforms. He reiterated the government’s commitment to practical approaches and strategic planning.

Regarding elections, PM Kakar stated that the interim government’s mandate is facilitating early general elections and delimitation following the census.

He affirmed equal opportunities for all registered political parties in general elections, while noting that laws exist to address any disruptive political behavior.

Regarding the May 9 riots, he condemned the attack on military installations and supported lawful measures to counter such threats.

Rise in terror attacks

Discussing the terror attacks carried out by the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban, PM Kakar highlighted the surplus military equipment left behind by US and allied forces in Afghanistan.

He expressed concern that this equipment was posing a threat to peace, underscoring the need for a coordinated approach to address this challenge.

He further added, “Foreign forces left Afghanistan after losing interest, but we are here to defend our home, children, mosques and places of worship.”

Additionally, he stated that cultural and faith-based connections, along with social integration, deeply anchor the ties between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

He emphasized Pakistan’s generosity towards Afghan refugees and mentioned that the government is formulating a policy to tackle the issue of illegal immigrants.
