VPNs
Recently, Russian authorities have compelled Apple to remove VPN applications from its App Store in Russia, impacting at least two services, Red Shield VPN and Le VPN.
The apps were reportedly deleted following demands from Roskomnadzor, Russia’s state media watchdog, citing unspecified illegal content within the VPNs.
Messages from Apple’s app review team informed both Red Shield VPN and Le VPN that their apps would be removed “per demand from Roskomnadzor.”
This move is part of Russia’s broader efforts to tighten control over online communications and restrict access to tools that can circumvent state censorship.
Since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Roskomnadzor has intensified its crackdown, targeting Western social media platforms, opposition media websites, and now VPN services.
Roskomnadzor’s actions against VPNs include attempts to block them directly and pushing for their inclusion in a state-approved white list, severely limiting the availability of VPN services that can effectively bypass restrictions.
In response to the app removals, Le VPN has appealed the decision with Roskomnadzor and is collaborating with other VPN providers and rights activists to assess the implications.
They emphasized that this incident signifies a significant escalation in Roskomnadzor’s influence over major tech firms like Apple, potentially shaping how global companies navigate regulatory environments in different jurisdictions.
Red Shield VPN suggested a workaround for users affected by the app removals, advising them to change their Apple ID’s region or country settings to regain access to VPN services.
The regulatory landscape in Russia has recently become more stringent, with Roskomnadzor gaining expanded powers to block websites that provide information on accessing prohibited resources or sell circumvention technologies like VPNs.
This development is expected to further restrict user access to critical digital resources amid heightened wartime censorship measures.
Overall, the removal of VPN apps from the Russian App Store underscores ongoing challenges for tech companies operating in regions with increasingly assertive regulatory oversight, impacting both business operations and user access to essential online tools.
