Washington, DC – Republicans in the US House of Representatives removed Democrat Ilhan Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee. The vote, which divided the House along party lines, was 218-211. Republicans cited Ilhan Omar’s 2019 remarks, widely condemned as antisemitic, as the reason for her removal. During the debate, Republican Mike Lawler stated, “Words matter. Rhetoric matters. It leads to harm. The congresswoman held accountable for her words and actions.” Democrats argued that Omar had apologised for the remarks and deleted the posts. Furthermore, Ilhan Omar, declared, “My leadership and voice will not be diminished. My voice will get louder and stronger.”

The ouster, led by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, was viewed as revenge by Democrats. They voted in 2021 to remove Republicans Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar from their committee assignments for similar reasons. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries claimed, “This isn’t about accountability. It’s about political revenge.”
