Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Masood Khan, emphasized that Pakistan’s relationship with China does not come at the expense of its friendship with the US, characterizing the ties with Beijing as “productive.”
During an interview with the China Global Television Network-America program ‘The Heat,’ Ambassador Khan discussed Islamabad’s existing ties with Beijing and Washington at length.
Regarding the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, the Pakistani envoy described it as “highly significant.” He noted that after completing early harvest projects under CPEC, both countries recognized the need for a more comprehensive approach, including investments in tourism, technology, vocational training, agriculture, and people-to-people exchanges.
“We have already disbursed approximately $25 billion, and by 2030, we aim to complete the remaining projects,” Ambassador Khan stated, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to the success of the flagship project under the Belt and Road Initiative.
In discussing China’s broader role and multilateralism, the ambassador stressed the importance of a level playing field for all countries to foster growth, prevent conflicts, and pursue peace through dialogue and diplomacy. He expressed optimism about the strengthening complementarities between the Western bloc and China, which would benefit the developing world, including Pakistan.
Regarding Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s upcoming visit to China, Ambassador Khan outlined the agenda, which includes enhancing defense ties, deepening economic cooperation, and fostering cultural exchanges.
Regarding Pakistan’s ties with the US, Ambassador Khan highlighted ongoing dialogue processes aimed at promoting shared objectives and mutually beneficial agendas.
Looking towards the future, Ambassador Khan outlined the contours of Pakistan-US relations post the Afghanistan withdrawal period, emphasizing efforts to manage perceptions and build a stand-alone relationship amidst regional complexities.
