Palestinian State
Norway’s parliament, in a significant move, approved a resolution urging the government to be prepared to recognize Palestine as an independent state. Introduced by the ruling coalition, the resolution garnered support from eight out of the 10 parties in parliament.
Unlike earlier proposals, the resolution no longer conditions recognition on a final peace accord. The resounding majority supporting the resolution included all parties except the Christian Democrats and the conservative Progress Party, which voted against it.
Norway, one of the few Western countries advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza, signals a notable diplomatic shift by expressing readiness to recognize Palestinian statehood.
Israel’s relentless air and ground attacks on Gaza, initiated after a cross-border attack by Hamas on October 7, have resulted in over 11,500 Palestinians killed, including more than 7,800 women and children, with over 29,200 injuries, as per Palestinian authorities. Numerous buildings, including hospitals, mosques, and churches, have been damaged or destroyed. The Israeli death toll stands at around 1,200, according to official figures.
