North Korea reveals first operational tactical nuclear-armed attack submarine

The leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un has participated in a ceremony unveiling what Pyongyang claims to be its first submarine capable of launching nuclear weapons. State media emphasized that the submarine significantly strengthens the country’s nuclear deterrent capabilities.

This newly unveiled submarine has been named “Hero Kim Kun Ok” in honor of a North Korean naval officer and historical figure. The development of a submarine with the capability to launch nuclear weapons has long been a priority for North Korea.

Photographs released by state media show Kim Jong Un at a shipyard, surrounded by naval officers. The colossal black submarine is visible in the background. Kim stated that the submarine would become a key component of the country’s “underwater offensive.”

He emphasized, “The nuclear attack submarine, which has been a symbol of aggression against our nation for the past few decades, now symbolizes our threatening power that strikes fear into our unscrupulous enemies.”

However, there is skepticism about the effectiveness of this new submarine. Analysts believe it is a modified version of a Soviet-era Romeo-class submarine, which Kim had inspected in 2019. The modifications would enable it to carry nuclear weapons.

Analysts have pointed out the limitations and vulnerabilities of this type of submarine. The major issues include its noise, slow speed, and limited range. It is believed that the vessel may be designed to carry shorter-range submarine-launched cruise missiles (SLCM) capable of targeting regional objectives.

North Korea’s Submarine Launch Raises Regional Concerns

South Korea has condemned the launch and questioned the submarine’s capabilities, suggesting that North Korea may have exaggerated its capabilities. Japan has expressed unease, noting that North Korea’s military activities pose a more significant and immediate threat to its security.

Despite these developments, North Korea has continued its regular testing of both ballistic and cruise missiles this year. This revelation of a new submarine comes ahead of the 75th anniversary of North Korea’s founding. There are reports of a Chinese delegation participating in the celebrations. Additionally, Kim Jong Un plans to travel to Russia to meet President Vladimir Putin, raising concerns about potential technology exchanges between the two nations.
