Wonsan, North Korea — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reiterated his country’s unwavering support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
During a high-level meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, currently on a three-day diplomatic visit to North Korea, Kim expressed his readiness to “unconditionally support and encourage all measures” taken by Moscow to address what he described as the root causes of the Ukraine crisis.
The two leaders met in the eastern port city of Wonsan, where the foreign ministers of both countries also convened for their second round of strategic dialogue. Their talks focused on expanding bilateral cooperation under a comprehensive partnership treaty signed last year, which includes provisions for mutual defense.
According to KCNA, Kim emphasized that the collaborative steps taken by North Korea and Russia in response to shifting global geopolitical dynamics would make a “great contribution to global peace and security.”
Earlier, Lavrov held talks with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui, culminating in a joint statement pledging to safeguard each country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Lavrov reportedly described the deepening relationship between Moscow and Pyongyang as an “invincible fighting brotherhood.”
Over the past two years, as the war in Ukraine has intensified, North Korea has significantly expanded its support for Russia, reportedly sending over 10,000 troops, arms, and military supplies. Additionally, North Korea has pledged to deploy around 6,000 military engineers and construction workers to assist in rebuilding efforts in Russia’s Kursk region.
Lavrov’s visit underscores the growing strategic alignment between the two isolated nations, both of which face international sanctions and increasing geopolitical tension with the West.
