Noam Chomsky Hospitalized After Stroke, Continues Advocacy for Gaza’s Plight

Renowned American academic and one of the world’s most prominent public intellectuals, Noam Chomsky, has been hospitalized due to complications following a severe stroke he suffered last year, his Brazilian wife has confirmed to the media.

Valeria Chomsky stated via email that her 95-year-old husband is in a São Paulo hospital, having been transported there by air ambulance after the stroke in June 2023. The couple has had a residence in Brazil since 2015.

Valeria corroborated details from a Monday report in the Brazilian newspaper, which indicated that her husband is experiencing difficulty speaking and has physical impairments. He is currently being cared for by a team of neurologists, speech therapists, and lung specialists.

She mentioned to the newspaper that her husband follows news on Palestine, and when he sees images of the war in Gaza, he raises his left arm in a gesture of sorrow and anger.

Shortly before becoming incapacitated, Noam Chomsky said in an interview that Israel’s brutal siege and deadly invasion of Gaza constitute one of the most significant crimes of the contemporary era.

Chomsky has been a leading critic of American foreign policy, regarded by millions worldwide as a symbol of protest and independence.

As an influential scholar and critic who has frequently challenged U.S. policy on issues ranging from the Middle East to Central America, as well as a compliant media, his books and essays are widely read and discussed by students, scholars, and the press around the world.

Known for his contributions to linguistics, political activism, and social criticism, Chomsky has been hailed as “the father of modern linguistics.”

As a longtime faculty member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he revolutionized the study of linguistics with his landmark 1957 book, “Syntactic Structures,” where he posited that humans are born with an innate ability to understand and formulate sentences they have never previously encountered.

Famed for concepts such as the Chomsky hierarchy, generative grammar, and the notion of a universal grammar, Chomsky’s profound contributions have influenced various fields, including cognitive science, philosophy, psychology, computer science, mathematics, and anthropology, leaving an indelible mark on everyday human life.

He authored the pivotal “context-free grammar” algorithm, essential in computer programming languages and foundational for modern language-understanding programs like Siri.

Chomsky’s legacy includes several biographies, numerous interviews across popular media platforms, and appearances in countless documentaries.
