Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday that the Israeli military’s intense combat against Hamas militants in Rafah, a southern city in Gaza, is approaching its conclusion.
“The intense phase of the fighting against Hamas is about to end,” Netanyahu stated during an interview.
He clarified that this does not signify the end of the war but marks the conclusion of the current intense phase in Rafah. “After the end of the intense phase, we will be able to redeploy some forces to the north, and we will do that. Primarily for defensive purposes but also to bring the (displaced) residents back home,” Netanyahu said. This interview marked his first appearance on an Israeli network since the war with Hamas began on October 7.
Netanyahu indicated he would not consent to any agreement that mandates an end to the conflict in Gaza. However, he expressed openness to a “partial” deal that could secure the return of some, if not all, hostages held in Gaza. “The goal is to return the kidnapped and uproot the Hamas regime in Gaza,” he affirmed.
Despite Netanyahu’s declarations, US officials have expressed skepticism about Israel’s objective of completely eliminating Hamas. On Wednesday, Israel’s top army spokesman, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, stated, “To say that we are going to make Hamas disappear is to throw sand in people’s eyes.” He explained that Hamas represents an ideology, and “we cannot eliminate an ideology.”
Despite the ongoing military operations and Netanyahu’s firm stance, the conflict has drawn widespread international attention and concern. Humanitarian organizations have raised alarms about the devastating impact on civilians in Gaza, calling for immediate measures to protect innocent lives and ensure access to essential services.
