United States Vice President Kamala Harris has officially secured the votes needed to become the Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential election, according to the Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Jaime Harrison.
This announcement sets the stage for a highly anticipated November showdown against former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee.
On Friday, Harrison confirmed that Harris had crossed the delegate threshold required for nomination. Although the virtual roll call process, where delegates cast their votes online, is set to continue until Monday, Harrison declared that Harris had already garnered a majority of votes from the convention delegates.
“I am so proud to confirm that Vice President Harris has earned more than a majority of votes from all convention delegates, and will be the nominee of the Democratic Party following the close of voting on Monday,” Harrison said during a call with supporters.
Harris, who has made history as the first Black and the first Asian American vice president in U.S. history, is poised to become the first woman of color to lead a major party’s presidential ticket. “I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee,” Harris said during the call.
The announcement comes shortly after Harris’s campaign revealed a significant fundraising milestone. The campaign reported raising $310 million last month, driven by a surge in small donations.
This impressive sum is more than double the $138.7 million raised by Trump’s campaign in July. Harris’s campaign also noted that two-thirds of their July donations came from first-time donors, reflecting strong grassroots support.
Trump, who has also been campaigning vigorously, boasted about his fundraising success on his Truth Social platform. He claimed to have raised $139 million in July alone and reported having $327 million cash on hand.
Trump’s campaign has been marked by intense rhetoric, including attacks on Harris’s racial identity, which critics have condemned as “repulsive.”
Recent opinion polls suggest a close race between Harris and Trump as the November 5 election approaches. Several swing states are expected to play a crucial role in determining the outcome.
Harris is anticipated to announce her vice-presidential running mate soon, a decision that could influence key battleground states.
Names being considered include Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.
The DNC has launched a new advertising campaign targeting Trump’s reluctance to commit to a debate with Harris.
The ads, prominently featured on digital homepages of major local newspapers in states where Trump is scheduled to campaign, criticize him for allegedly avoiding a debate and question his stance on abortion issues.
Trump, who became the first former president in U.S. history to be convicted of a crime earlier this year in a New York hush-money case, has also faced criticism for his role in overturning Roe v. Wade during his presidency.
The DNC’s ad campaign will follow Trump through local news outlets as he rallies in various states.
The campaign’s strategies are evolving as Biden has exited the race following a challenging debate performance against Trump in July.
Trump has suggested that a planned September 10 debate should be moved to Fox News, and in a recent call with reporters, he affirmed his willingness to debate Harris at least once.
