TEL AVIV: Rioters attacked Israeli journalists during the riots at Sde Teiman on Monday afternoon.
Initially, Channel 12 reported that rioters attacked reporter Uri Isaac and the Channel 12 team at the Sde Teiman detention facility. Isaac and his team were surrounded by demonstrators who cursed and pushed them.
According to footage, Otzma Yehudit MK Almog Cohen is seen defending Isaac from the rioters and urging them to stay away, according to The Times of Israel report.
Isaac described the incident in an interview with Channel 12: “We arrived very close to the checkpoint, where the protesters had gathered. And there, they just started to come at us, shouting that we were Hamas, spitting, throwing water, and knocking over the cameras. I’m a reserve fighter; I spent five months in the Gaza Strip, risking my life. No one will come and tell me if I’m Hamas or not Hamas, or if I’m Zionist or not Zionist. It’s a disgrace and a shame.”
A reporter from Galatz was also insulted at the scene, according to a Ynet report.
Later, it was discovered that another journalist, Ilana Curiel from Ynet and Yediot Ahronot, was also attacked during the riots while attempting to report on the incident.
Curiel wrote on X, formerly Twitter, “I am in tears. I’ve been spat on. Called a whore, traitor. My phone was tossed. When I was only trying to do my job.”
Israeli mob attacked IDF base
Earlier, according to Israeli media, a Palestinian detainee at Sde Teiman Prison in southern Israel’s Negev desert has been brutally gang-raped by Israeli soldiers. The detainee was reportedly taken to the hospital with severe injuries to an intimate body part, rendering him unable to walk.
Israeli public broadcaster KAN reported on Monday that Israeli Police have arrived at the prison to detain the soldiers implicated in the sexual assault. The Israeli military has announced that nine soldiers are under investigation following allegations of “gang rape” of a detainee at this high-security facility, known for its harsh conditions.
An Associated Press investigation, along with reports from various human rights organizations, has highlighted the “abysmal conditions” at Sde Teiman, Israel’s largest detention center.
Earlier this year, a report by the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) noted allegations of ill-treatment and abuse of detainees in Israeli custody, though it did not specify the facility.
The Israeli military has generally denied allegations of mistreatment. Reports indicate that when military police arrived at Sde Teiman to detain the accused soldiers, they were met with protests and altercations. The detentions have sparked a strong backlash from members of Israel’s far-right government, who view the investigation as an affront to the soldiers’ service.
