Israeli Control of Rafah Crossing Prevents 2,500 Palestinians from Performing Hajj

Rafah Crossing

Israel’s actions in Gaza, including the seizure of the Rafah crossing, have prevented 2,500 Palestinians from performing the Hajj pilgrimage this year, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Endowments.

This significant disruption is described by ministry spokesperson Ikrami Al-Mudallal as a severe violation of religious freedom.

Due to the ongoing conflict and closure of the Rafah crossing since May 7, the ministry was unable to complete essential preparations for the pilgrimage, such as arranging transportation and accommodations.

Al-Mudallal emphasized that the affected group of 2,500 Gaza pilgrims represents 38% of the total 6,600 Palestinian pilgrims expected to perform Hajj.

He further stated that efforts are underway to engage with Saudi Arabia and Egypt to address these infringements and find alternative travel solutions for the pilgrims.

Priority will be given to ensure that those unable to perform Hajj this year retain their opportunity for next year, especially as many are elderly or ill and have waited years for their chance.

Highlighting a royal gesture by Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz, Al-Mudallal mentioned that while 500 pilgrims were hosted this year from Gaza, the remaining allocation was redirected to families outside the enclave due to travel restrictions.

This gesture was part of Saudi Arabia’s Hajj and Umrah Guest Program, accommodating those who had left Gaza amid the conflict or for medical treatment.

The Ministry of Endowments in Gaza has condemned these restrictions as not only a violation of religious freedom but also of international humanitarian law.

They called on Egypt and Saudi Arabia to exert pressure, particularly on Israel, to enable Gaza residents to participate in the Hajj.

The ministry highlighted the emotional and financial impact on the affected pilgrims, emphasizing their right to practice their religious obligations freely despite the ongoing hardships caused by the conflict.

Overall, the situation underscores broader concerns about humanitarian conditions in Gaza, where Israeli actions have been condemned by international bodies for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The ongoing blockade and military operations have exacerbated suffering, leading to severe shortages of essential supplies and humanitarian crises affecting the civilian population.
