Gaza Hospital Raid
CAIRO: Israeli forces conducted a raid on the Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza, on Friday, detaining dozens of medical staff, including the hospital’s director, Hussam Abu Safiya, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
The military ordered patients and hundreds of others to evacuate the facility during the raid. The fate of Abu Safiya remained unclear, and the ministry expressed concern for his well-being after some of the freed staff reported that he had been beaten by soldiers during the detention.
The Israeli military has not commented on the detainees or the reported treatment of Abu Safiya. This raid, which targeted one of the last remaining major medical facilities in northern Gaza, severely disrupted healthcare services in the area.
The World Health Organization confirmed that the hospital was taken out of service, leaving residents without access to medical care.
Some patients were evacuated to the Indonesian Hospital, which was non-operational, while others were transferred to hospitals in southern Gaza. However, medical staff were reportedly prevented from joining the patients at the Indonesian Hospital.
The Israeli military claimed that Hamas fighters had used Kamal Adwan Hospital as a base during the 15-month-long conflict, but Hamas dismissed these allegations, calling them lies and insisting that there were no fighters at the hospital.
The raid was part of a broader operation by Israel, which has targeted medical facilities and other civilian infrastructure in its ongoing military actions in Gaza.
In addition to the hospital raid, Israeli airstrikes across Gaza on Saturday killed 18 Palestinians, including at least nine in a bombing of a house in Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza.
The Gaza Health Ministry reported that 48 Palestinians had died in the previous 24 hours, bringing the total death toll of the war to 45,484, with over 108,000 wounded.
The Israeli military also launched operations in northern Gaza, specifically in Beit Hanoun, where troops continued to evacuate civilians for their safety.
Israeli forces have heavily targeted areas around northern Gaza, including Jabalia, Beit Hanoun, and Beit Lahiya, leading to accusations of ethnic cleansing due to the forced displacement of Palestinian residents.
Israel denies these accusations, stating that its military actions are aimed at preventing Hamas from regrouping in these areas.
