TEHRAN: Iran has formally called for an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in response to the recent U.S. airstrikes on its nuclear facilities, denouncing the attacks as a blatant violation of the UN Charter and the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
In a letter submitted on Sunday, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, described the strikes as a “grave threat to regional and international peace and security.” He confirmed that the Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear sites were targeted during pre-dawn raids by the United States.
Iravani further claimed the facilities were operating “under the full supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),” though no supporting evidence was provided. Iran has recently intensified its criticism of the IAEA, accusing the agency of bias amid mounting tensions with Israel and Western allies.
Violation of International Law
The letter labelled the U.S. strikes as a “clear breach” of both the UN Charter and the obligations under the NPT, which governs the peaceful use of nuclear energy and prohibits attacks on nuclear infrastructure.
“This unlawful act must be addressed urgently. The Security Council must condemn these aggressions and take measures to ensure that those responsible are held accountable,” the letter stated.
Call for Accountability
Tehran’s appeal to the UNSC signals a shift toward multilateral diplomatic pressure following a dramatic escalation in the region. Iran insists the strikes not only violated international norms but also risk setting a dangerous precedent in targeting civilian nuclear infrastructure.
Iran’s demand comes amid growing global calls for de-escalation after the U.S. joined Israel’s military campaign, targeting what Washington described as Iran’s “nuclear enrichment capacity.” The situation remains tense as the international community awaits a formal response from the Security Council.
