Israel is gearing up to implement a plan for the post-Hamas era in northern Gaza, as announced by National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi at Reichman University’s Herzliya Conference.
Hanegbi indicated that the Israeli Defense Forces’ strategy has been refined in recent weeks and will soon manifest in practical actions.
The United States has consistently criticized Israel, cautioning that failing to prepare for the aftermath of Hamas could result in either permanent Israeli occupation of Gaza or chaotic conditions that facilitate Hamas’s resurgence. This concern was underscored during Defense Minister Yoav Gallant’s recent discussions in Washington, where Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the plan’s significance for Israel’s security.
Hanegbi, echoing sentiments from his Washington visit, stressed the necessity of replacing Hamas with a viable alternative for long-term stability in Gaza. He acknowledged the complexity of eliminating Hamas as an ideological and political force, advocating instead for a local leadership supported by moderate Arab states.
The debate over dealing with Hamas intensified following remarks by IDF Spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, who cautioned against unrealistic expectations of eliminating Hamas entirely, arguing that it is deeply ingrained in Gazan society.
Regarding the ongoing hostage situation involving over 120 individuals, Hanegbi expressed cautious optimism about ongoing negotiations, fueled by international pressure on Hamas, particularly from Qatar. Israeli efforts have focused on securing a temporary ceasefire and a lasting resolution to the conflict, although Prime Minister Netanyahu reiterated that the ultimate goal remains the destruction of Hamas and the return of all hostages.
In addition to Gaza, concerns were voiced about potential escalations in Israel’s northern border with Hezbollah.
While Israel and the US are committed to diplomatic efforts to prevent a broader conflict, there are preparations for alternative measures if diplomatic solutions fail, amidst warnings of regional implications from top US officials.
Hanegbi highlighted recent diplomatic engagements with US counterparts, emphasizing a unified approach to resolving regional tensions and securing the safe return of hostages.
