The Holy Kaaba in Makkah recently received its annual Kiswa, the intricately designed black cloth cover, marking the occasion on the first day of the Islamic new year, 1 Muharram 1446H.
Crafted by 159 skilled artisans from the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Kiswa of the Kaaba, under the guidance of specialized engineers and technicians, this monumental task involved great precision and care.
The new Kiswa weighs 1,350 kilograms and stands at a height of 14 meters, composed of four distinct sides and a door curtain. It is adorned with exquisite gold embroidery, utilizing 120 kilograms of gold, 100 kilograms of silver, and 1,000 kilograms of silk. Each piece of gold embroidery alone takes between 60 to 120 days to meticulously craft by hand.
The installation process is a meticulously orchestrated affair. The four sides are individually lifted to the summit of the Kaaba and carefully stitched together. Subsequently, the curtain and edges are meticulously affixed, ensuring every detail aligns perfectly.
Traditionally replaced during the Hajj season on the morning of Dhul Hijjah 9, a recent decree by Saudi Arabia’s General Presidency for the Two Holy Mosques shifted the event to the eve of Muharram 1. This change aims to harmonize the replacement with the Islamic new year, emphasizing its significance in the annual Islamic calendar.
The new Kiswa stands not only as a testament to the artistry and dedication of its creators but also as a symbol of reverence and protection for the Kaaba. Its intricate design and materials not only reflect the cultural heritage of the region but also underscore the enduring commitment to preserving the sanctity of this holiest of sites in Islam.
