Zoo director eats up rare goats for dinner

The former head of the Zoochilpan Zoo in Guerrero state, Mexico, José Rubén Nava Noriega, has been accused of having some of the zoo’s animals slaughtered for meat, among other issues.

Fernando Ruiz, the director of wildlife for the Guerrero Environment Department, stated during a press conference on Tuesday:

Documentation from the Zoochilpan Zoo in Chilpancingo overstated the number of pygmy goats present in the region last summer.

Ruiz stated:

There were “five females and five males of which the former director had four male specimens for use at the New Year’s Eve dinner.”

He further added:

“That is to say, those four specimens were sacrificed and cooked in the facilities of the same zoo and were used as food in the year-end celebration.”

Ruiz added:

The animals were “not suitable for human consumption,” putting the health of those who had the meal at risk.

The Environment Department published a statement describing other administrative issues at the zoo.

According to the statement:

In a second instance, Nava exchanged four calves for park supplies and equipment, but the department was not alerted in accordance with protocol about the delivery of the animals.

And the tools and materials had vanished from the zoo’s property.

Nava disputed all of the allegations and said that a “dirty war” for control of the zoo’s financing was taking place.

He said that everything he did as head of the zoo was legitimate.
