The US president has issued a more detailed statement regarding the alleged assassination attempt on former President Trump.
“A suspect is in custody, and I commend the Secret Service and their law enforcement partners for their vigilance and efforts to protect the former President and those around him. I am relieved that the former President is unharmed,” President Biden said.
He continued, “An active investigation is underway as law enforcement gathers more details about the incident. I have directed my team to ensure that the Secret Service has every resource and protective measure necessary to guarantee the former President’s ongoing safety.”
Biden recently announced he would not seek re-election and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate in the upcoming presidential race.
The apparent assassination attempt occurs as campaign season intensifies. Both major political parties have called for restraint in rhetoric to avoid provoking political violence. However, with the competition between Trump and Harris heating up, these appeals have largely gone unheeded.
While Democrats continue to frame Trump as a threat to democracy, Republicans have ramped up their rhetoric on immigration.
Trump has recently spread unfounded claims about Haitian immigrants abducting and harming pets in Ohio, raising concerns about public safety.
