Expanding Study Opportunities in the Schengen Region for Pakistanis

With the recent inclusion of Romania and Bulgaria in the Schengen Area, there has been a notable increase in study opportunities for non-EU students, including those from Pakistan. Unfortunately, many are unaware of the advantages these newly added Schengen countries can offer. This article will explore the core benefits these countries bring to the table for Pakistani students considering higher education in Europe.

Over the years, I’ve come across many individuals who are unfamiliar with these recently joined Schengen nations, often due to limited travel experiences or perceptions shaped by their country of origin. Europe, with its prestigious educational institutions, often sets the benchmark for academic excellence. While many European universities hold triple accreditation (EQUIS, AMBA, and AACSB), many students overlook these institutions in less well-known Schengen countries.

For a country to become part of the EU and the Schengen Area, it must meet specific legal, infrastructural, and quality standards. This process can take a decade or more, signifying that these countries have met stringent criteria before being granted access to the Schengen Area. As a result, these countries offer quality education at affordable prices—a significant factor, especially in today’s challenging economic climate. With scholarships and low semester fees ranging from a few thousand euros, these countries present an attractive option for students aiming to reduce financial burden.

Scholarship opportunities such as Erasmus+, Marie Sklodowska Curie, and others, are excellent options for students seeking to study in these countries. Additionally, students benefit from legal working hours that vary depending on the level of study. Upon graduation, a job-search visa is often available, increasing the chances of securing employment. When considering political and legal factors, the stability of these countries, despite global political shifts, adds further value to the study destination.

From an academic perspective, these countries offer diverse courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, covering fields like business, medicine, engineering, IT, and more. There is something for everyone, regardless of the discipline.

Another advantage is the exposure and diversity gained through travel. The interconnected rail networks, budget buses, and affordable air travel options like Ryanair, Wizz Air, and EasyJet provide students with the opportunity to explore Europe’s vast landscapes and cultural landmarks. This exposure, coupled with the chance to attend academic conferences and workshops across Schengen countries, can be invaluable in broadening students’ horizons.

Though the colder climate of Scandinavian, Nordic, or Baltic regions might pose a challenge, the well-maintained heating systems ensure comfort indoors. Adapting to the weather is simply part of the experience, offering a chance to acclimatize and grow.

In conclusion, it’s time for Pakistani students to consider exploring the lesser-known, less crowded Schengen countries. These destinations offer excellent opportunities for personal and professional development, with quality education, financial affordability, and extensive travel exposure.

This is not to undermine the value of more popular study destinations, which also have their unique advantages. However, this article encourages students to broaden their horizons and explore the unexplored, which could potentially offer a different, enriching experience. The Higher Education Commission and universities in Pakistan could consider building collaborations and partnerships with these Schengen countries, creating more opportunities for students to gain exposure and contribute to the academic community back home.
