The letter by the lawyer of Elon Musk alleges that Meta has recruited ex-Twitter employees with highly confidential information.
Just hours after the public launch of Threads, an app developed by Meta, Twitter’s CEO accused Mark Zuckerberg of utilizing Twitter’s “trade secrets” and “other intellectual property” to build the competing app. Threads had a highly successful launch, amassing over 30 million sign-ups within a few hours of its public availability.
Twitter threatened to sue Meta shortly after Threads’ launch, aiming to outperform the struggling platform owned by Elon Musk. In a letter addressed to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, published by online news outlet Semafor, lawyer Alex Spiro, representing Musk, accused Meta of engaging in the “unlawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property.”
The letter alleged that Meta hired ex-Twitter employees with access to highly confidential information and trade secrets.
Threads pose the most significant challenge yet to Twitter, which is owned by Musk. Despite ongoing struggles, none of Twitter’s potential competitors have succeeded in replacing the world’s largest social media platform.
The rivalry between Zuckerberg and Musk has intensified with their agreement to meet for a hand-to-hand combat cage match.
In his first tweet in over a decade, Mark Zuckerberg posted a Spiderman pointing at Spiderman meme, seemingly hinting at the similarities between Threads and Twitter.
At 11 pm GMT on Wednesday, the team launched Threads on the Apple and Android app stores in 100 countries. Initial feedback noted its resemblance to Twitter, although in a more scaled-back form.
Zuckerberg announced that within a few hours of the launch, over 30 million people had already downloaded Threads. Expressing optimism, Mark Zuckerberg stated that the launch of Threads feels like the beginning of something special. However, he also acknowledged that there is still much work ahead to further develop the app. Notable celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, and Hugh Jackman, along with media outlets such as The Washington Post and The Economist, had already established active accounts on Threads.
Zuckerberg aims to create a public conversations app with 1 billion users, acknowledging that it may take time. Twitter, on the other hand, has stated that it has more than 200 million daily users.
