Tech billionaire Elon Musk has refuted claims that he is contributing $45 million per month to support former President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. In a recent interview with Canadian psychologist Jordan B. Peterson, Musk labeled the media reports suggesting such a donation as false.
“I never said I was donating $45 million a month to Trump,” Musk clarified. Instead, he explained that he has established a political action committee (PAC) named the “America PAC.” This PAC, according to Musk, is designed to legally receive and distribute funds to political campaigns. “PACs allow a lot more money into the system than would otherwise be possible,” Elon Musk said. “Its intent is to promote the principles that made America great in the first place.”
The Wall Street Journal had previously reported Musk’s intention to support the America PAC, which backs Trump’s campaign. However, filings for the PAC show it has raised over $8 million, with no direct contribution from Musk listed.
Musk publicly endorsed Trump on July 13, following an attack on Trump during a campaign rally. Despite this, Musk has been vocal in his criticism of Democratic candidates, particularly Vice President Kamala Harris, who is currently leading in the race to become the Democratic presidential nominee.
Elon Musk’s recent clarification regarding his political activities has come at a time of intense scrutiny and increased political engagement in the U.S. This heightened attention is largely due to the broader national conversation about political donations, the influence of Political Action Committees (PACs), and their impact on electoral processes.
