Dozens of US doctors dismiss Israeli claim of misuse of Gaza hospitals by Hamas

A group of 99 American physicians and medical professionals who volunteered in Gaza during its siege reported seeing no evidence of Hamas resistance activity in the enclave’s hospitals. In an open letter addressed to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, they urged an immediate cessation of U.S. military, economic, and diplomatic support for Israel.

The group, who collectively spent 254 weeks working in Gaza’s healthcare facilities, shared their observations of the dire humanitarian situation caused by Israel’s ongoing assault. They described witnessing atrocities and “crimes beyond comprehension” and emphasized that they saw no militant activity in any of Gaza’s hospitals or healthcare centers.

The letter also condemned Israel for deliberately destroying Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure and for targeting medical professionals with torture, disappearances, and killings. The physicians highlighted the severe suffering of women and children, including widespread malnutrition and a lack of essential medical supplies.

They cited a July study from The Lancet that projected the accumulative toll of Israel’s military actions in Gaza could result in a death toll exceeding 186,000 people. The group provided harrowing firsthand accounts, including from pediatric nurse practitioner Asma Taha, who recounted how infants born healthy died due to starvation as their malnourished mothers were unable to breastfeed and there were no supplies to substitute.

The letter also criticized Israel’s repeated displacement of Gaza’s vulnerable population, most of whom are children, to areas without access to basic sanitation. The group insisted that this pattern of violence against civilians, particularly children, could not be accidental, holding Israel’s civilian and military leadership accountable.

They called for the Biden administration to support an international arms embargo on both Israel and Palestinian groups until a permanent ceasefire is established, and all hostages on both sides are released. Additionally, the signatories requested a meeting with Biden and Harris to discuss their experiences and advocate for an urgent shift in U.S. Middle East policy.

In reiterating their earlier calls from a July 25 letter, the physicians pressed for the reopening of the Rafah crossing to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza. They condemned continued U.S. support for Israel, stating that each day of arms supply results in more women and children being killed by American-made bombs and bullets.

Israel’s actions in Gaza have led to the deaths of nearly 42,000 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, although other estimates suggest the death toll may surpass 200,000. The destruction has caused severe shortages of medicine, food, water, and electricity in Gaza.
