Britain to announce up to £242 million in Ukraine aid

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is preparing to announce a substantial commitment of up to £242 million in new assistance for Ukraine during the forthcoming G7 summit in Italy, which is scheduled to commence on Thursday, according to information from his office.

The summit in Puglia is expected to be heavily focused on Ukraine, with President Volodymyr Zelensky joining G7 leaders to finalize an agreement on using frozen Russian assets to support his country, which has endured significant devastation from ongoing conflict.

At the summit, Sunak will unveil a bilateral aid package of up to £242 million ($310 million) for Ukraine. This funding is designed to address immediate humanitarian needs, support energy infrastructure restoration, and stabilize critical sectors. Additionally, it aims to lay a foundation for Ukraine’s long-term recovery, as detailed in a statement released by the prime minister’s office on Wednesday evening.

“This funding underscores the UK’s unwavering international solidarity with Ukraine and our ability to respond flexibly to urgent challenges posed by Russian aggression,” the statement emphasized, citing recent attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure by Russia.

Sunak’s office further highlighted his commitment to collaborating closely with other G7 leaders to devise effective strategies for leveraging frozen Russian assets in support of Ukraine’s recovery efforts.

“As we face this critical juncture, it is imperative that we act decisively and with ingenuity to strengthen Ukraine and bring an end to Putin’s illegal war,” Sunak asserted.
