Border Police Officer Killed, 10 Injured in Terror Attack at Beersheba Bus Station

A Border Police officer was killed, and at least 10 others were injured when a terrorist opened fire at the Beersheba bus station on Sunday afternoon.

The victim, identified as 19-year-old Sgt. Shira Suslik from Beersheba, lost her life when the attacker stormed a McDonald’s in the city’s central bus station, shooting indiscriminately.

The assailant, identified as 29-year-old Ahmad al-Uqbi from the unrecognized Bedouin village of Uqbi near Hura, was reportedly killed at the scene by IDF soldiers. Al-Uqbi, an Israeli citizen, was noted to have a prior criminal record.

The Magen David Adom ambulance service reported that 10 people were injured and taken to Soroka Medical Center. This included a woman in serious condition and four men with moderate injuries, all of whom suffered gunshot wounds.

Five others were in stable condition, having sustained injuries from glass shards or blunt trauma. Three individuals were also treated for acute anxiety, according to MDA.

Authorities are investigating whether the attacker used both a gun and a knife during the assault.

In November 2023, Sgt. Suslik had shared an Instagram post about celebrating her 19th birthday amid conflict, expressing the importance of her role as a uniformed officer.

The Israel Police noted that she is survived by her parents and three siblings.

Tarin Yaakobov, the manager of the McDonald’s branch, described hearing gunshots and witnessing the assailant firing indiscriminately. Staff hid in the freezer, holding the door shut for about 15 minutes before emerging.

Paramedic Boris Mento recalled the chaotic scene, mentioning that some injured people had sought refuge in nearby stores. First responders provided initial aid on-site before transporting victims to the hospital.

Al-Uqbi is reportedly a relative of Muhanad al-Uqbi, who carried out a similar attack at the same location in 2015.

Following the incident, Transportation Minister Miri Regev called for the deportation of terrorists’ families, arguing for stronger deterrent measures. Yisrael Beytenu party chairman Avigdor Liberman also advocated for immediate action, urging the government to advance a related bill.

Ra’am party leader MK Mansour Abbas condemned the attack, emphasizing that it does not represent the values of the Arab citizens who are committed to civic, moral, and legal principles, and reject violence.

The attack took place on the eve of the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas assault on southern Israel, and just days after another attack in Jaffa where two Palestinian assailants killed seven people at a light rail stop.
