Balochistan’s fishing industry is set to expand with introduction of new initiatives

Balochistan’s fishing industry is on the brink of significant expansion, driven by a series of government initiatives aimed at maximizing its potential.

Currently valued at $500 million, the province’s marine fishing capacity holds promise to surge up to $100 billion. In 2023 alone, the industry harvested 137,000 metric tons of fish, amounting to $105 million.

Employing a substantial workforce of 600,000 individuals, including 82,583 registered fishermen, the industry is pivotal to the region’s economic landscape. Recent government efforts have introduced transformative projects such as a marine ambulance service, the establishment of eight coastal workshops, and the development of a model fish market in Pasni.

Looking ahead to the fiscal year 2024-2025, the government has greenlit ambitious plans including the establishment of fishing complexes and the implementation of the DDSC scheme, totaling Rs50 million in investment.

An additional Rs100 million has been earmarked for the digitalization of the Fisheries Department, aiming to streamline operations and enhance efficiency across the sector.

Freshwater fishing, currently contributing 5.7% of the total production (approximately 1,563 metric tons), is poised for growth with the ongoing construction of 100 dams. Of these, 66 dams have been completed, boasting a capacity to store 0.320 million acre-feet of water and yield 273 million tons of fish.

Notably, dams like Mirani and Hub alone can generate 1,000 metric tons of fish, while extensive canal projects including Pat Feeder, Kirthar, and Kachhi are expected to further bolster production capacities.

Moreover, the establishment of a fish hatchery in Dera Murad Jamali, funded at Rs50 million, stands as a testament to the province’s commitment to advancing fish farming. These initiatives collectively underscore Balochistan’s determination to harness its rich marine resources, foster sustainable growth, and bolster economic prosperity for its populace.
