Arab-Islamic Ministers Condemn US Veto: Disapproval Echoes in Blinken Meeting

Blinken Meeting

RIYADH: Foreign ministers from Arab and Islamic nations expressed their strong opposition to the US veto that thwarted international efforts to secure a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

During a meeting with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, the Arab-Islamic Ministerial Committee reiterated its call for the United States to fulfill its responsibilities and take necessary actions to compel Israel to immediately agree to a ceasefire.

The foreign ministers emphasized their united rejection of Israeli aggression against Palestinians in Gaza, underscoring the urgent need to halt hostilities, safeguard civilians, and lift the blockade obstructing humanitarian aid access to the conflict-stricken enclave.

The ministers vocalized their disapproval of attempts to displace Palestinians from Gaza, stressing the importance of “creating a real political climate that leads to a two-state solution,” as per the SPA statement.

Key figures in the meeting included Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Al-Safadi, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry, Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Riyad Al-Maliki, and Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan.

The ministers’ objection to the US veto underscores a broader regional call for international intervention to address the crisis in Gaza and emphasizes the significance of diplomatic efforts in resolving the conflict and advancing a two-state solution. The meeting highlights the collective stance of Arab and Islamic nations in seeking immediate actions to end the violence, protect civilians, and pave the way for a sustainable political resolution in the region.
