A sanctioned Russian central banker has been appointed to represent Russia on the board of the Washington-based International Monetary Fund (IMF), the current postholder announced on Tuesday.
Ksenia Yudaeva, formerly the first deputy governor of Russia’s Central Bank and currently an adviser to Governor Elvira Nabiullina, will assume the role.
“Yes, I confirm. From November 1, Ksenia will be the Russian Executive Director at the IMF,” Aleksei Mozhin stated in an email to AFP, corroborating reports from Russian news agencies TASS and RIA.
Mozhin, who has held the position since 1996, is the longest-serving member of the IMF’s Executive Board.
Yudaeva was placed under U.S. sanctions on April 20, 2022, two months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began. Her inclusion on the sanctions list is linked to her roles at the Russian Central Bank and Otkritie commercial bank, according to the U.S. State Department.
U.S. sanctions theoretically bar affected individuals from entering U.S. territory, despite the IMF’s headquarters being located in Washington, D.C.
The sanctions also freeze any assets held by these individuals in the United States and prohibit American companies or citizens from engaging in commercial or financial transactions with them.
