Indonesia has momentarily halted discussions on the Gaza Board of Peace as tensions in Iran escalate. Foreign Minister Sugiono announced the decision on Tuesday. His remarks were, โAll BoP discussions are on hold as all attention has shifted to the situation in Iran.โ The government will negotiate with Gulf partners who are under threats amidst rising regional tensions.
Additionally, the US and Israeli military actions in Iran have caused civilian deaths, disrupted international flights, and pushed oil prices higher. The Strait of Hormuz has effectively closed, forcing nations, including Indonesia, to re-navigate diplomatic efforts.
Domestic Reactions to the Pause
The Indonesian Ulema Council called on March 1 for the country to leave the Board of Peace entirely. They argued that the initiative no longer aligns with true peace efforts. Meanwhile, Nahdlatul Ulama, the nationโs largest Muslim organization, urged Jakarta to use its position to pressure Israel and the United States to stop the violence immediately.
Sugiono reassured that President Prabowo Subianto is ready to mediate the Iran conflict. The government aims to reduce tensions while balancing strong support for Palestinian rights.
Indonesiaโs Role in Gaza and Peacekeeping
US Presient Donald Trump established Board of Peace in September to resolve Israel’s war in Gaza. Indonesia joined as an influential member by agreeing to deploy 1,000 troops by early April for a proposed multinational peacekeeping force.
Despite the pause, Indonesia continues to monitor the situation closely. The government is committed to active diplomacy and maintaining regional stability.
