NASHIK / MUMBAI: A self-styled godman and numerologist has suddenly become the most talked-about person in India after his arrest triggered one of the biggest scandals in recent years. Ashok Kharat, better known as “Captain,” was taken into custody on March 17, 2026, in Nashik. What started as a simple rape case has now snowballed into serious allegations of sexual exploitation, blackmail, and massive financial fraud.
The case exploded on social media when a Special Investigation Team recovered a pen drive containing 58 disturbing videos involving multiple women. People across the country have been sharing the news nonstop, pushing “Captain Kharat” to the top of trending lists. Many are now calling the explosive evidence the “Desi Epstein Files” because of the shocking scale of the material.
How the Godman Allegedly Trapped His Victims
According to police, Kharat used his image as a spiritual leader to lure women who came to him for help with personal or marital problems. He would promise to solve their troubles through special rituals, but investigators say he drugged them and exploited them instead. The former Merchant Navy officer also faces charges of blackmail. Police believe he secretly recorded victims to keep them quiet and under his control.
In addition, Kharat allegedly used fear tactics and black magic on wealthy clients. He would show them fake snakes or give them “enchanted water,” claiming they were cursed. Many paid him lakhs of rupees out of fear. So far, eight separate police complaints have been filed against him.
Political Fallout Hits Hard
The scandal has already claimed a high-profile political victim. Rupali Chakankar, who headed the Maharashtra State Commission for Women, resigned from her post on March 20. She also stepped down as president of the NCP Women’s Wing.
Two videos played a major role in her downfall. In one, she is seen washing Kharat’s feet in a ritual. In another, she openly calls him her spiritual guide and credits him for her success. Critics said it was unacceptable for a women’s rights leader to show such respect to a man now accused of serious crimes against women. Chakankar later said the videos were old, but the damage was already done.
Opposition parties, especially Shiv Sena (UBT), have jumped on the issue. They released more photos showing Kharat meeting with politicians and businessmen. Leaders claim the pen drive points to a much bigger network involving powerful people in the state.
The case continues to send shockwaves through Maharashtra. As fresh details emerge daily, people are demanding a thorough investigation to uncover the full truth behind the so-called “Desi Epstein Files.”
Police say they are still examining the evidence and more arrests could follow soon.
