Shubman Gill Left Out After Prolonged T20 Slump
Shubman Gill, 26, has struggled to find rhythm in T20 cricket. In his last 15 T20 matches, Gill scored only 291 runs. His average during this period stands at 24.25. These numbers raised concerns among selectors.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar addressed the decision directly. He said Gill is currently short of runs. Agarkar stressed that form and balance were key selection criteria. The selectors felt Gill needed time away from T20 internationals to reset.
Gill continues to lead India in Tests and One-Day Internationals. However, his exclusion underlines the team’s format-specific approach. Selectors want players who are in peak T20 form ahead of the global event.

Suryakumar Yadav Retained as Captain Despite Form Concerns
Suryakumar Yadav remains India’s T20 captain. His recent numbers have also been under scrutiny. The specialist T20 batter has scored 244 runs in his last 22 innings. He has not registered a single half-century during that run.
Ajit Agarkar defended the decision. He said the selectors have full faith in Suryakumar’s leadership and match-winning ability. The management believes big players can rise on big occasions.

Ishan Kishan Returns as Squad Takes Shape
Wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan has earned a recall. He impressed selectors with strong performances in domestic cricket. Kishan last played for India in 2023. His aggressive batting suits the T20 format well.
The selected squad will also feature in five home T20 Internationals against New Zealand. The series begins on January 21. These matches will be India’s final international assignment before the World Cup.
The upcoming T20 World Cup will be the 10th edition of the tournament. It will be jointly hosted by Sri Lanka and India. A total of 20 nations will compete.
