In the wake of India’s cross-border strikes inside Pakistan, the central government has urged several states to prepare for a potential retaliatory response from Islamabad.
According to The Indian Express, Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened a high-level security review via video conference on Wednesday afternoon. The meeting included Lieutenant Governors of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, chief ministers from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and West Bengal, and a representative from the Sikkim government.
“All states should carry out preparations as per the mock drill guidelines,” Shah stated. He emphasized the need for uninterrupted functioning of essential services such as hospitals, emergency services, and the supply of critical goods.
He also directed state authorities to monitor and curb anti-national content circulating on social and other media platforms. “Swift, coordinated action with central agencies is essential,” he added. Shah called for enhanced protection of vulnerable infrastructure and urged states to work actively to prevent the spread of fear among citizens.
In addition, Shah instructed states to place disaster response teams, civil defence, Home Guards, and the National Cadet Corps on high alert. “Public engagement through citizens and NGOs should be promoted,” he noted, while also emphasizing improved coordination between local administrations, the military, and paramilitary units.
The meeting was attended by top officials from the home ministry, including the Union Home Secretary, Intelligence Bureau Director, and the Director Generals of the BSF and Central Industrial Security Force.
“All senior paramilitary officials were instructed to reinforce border outposts, especially along key infiltration routes,” said an official. He added that personnel on leave have been recalled and are being briefed to handle any emerging situations.
Another senior source confirmed that the Sashastra Seema Bal has been directed to strengthen security along India’s borders with Nepal and Bhutan.
