Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan underwent a brief medical procedure for an eye condition at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad on the night of January 24, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar confirmed on Thursday.
According to Tarar, Imran Khan, currently imprisoned at Rawalpindiโs Adiala Jail, was examined by eye specialists in the jail before being referred to PIMS for a necessary procedure. โAt PIMS, his eyes were further examined, and after his written consent, a 20-minute medical procedure was successfully performed,โ the minister said. Imran was then returned to Adiala Jail with detailed instructions from the attending doctors.
โThe procedure was completed with stable vitals, and he is absolutely healthy,โ Tarar emphasized. He reiterated that all prisoners have access to medical treatment in accordance with jail regulations.
The procedure followed PTI reports that Imran had been diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in his right eye, a condition that, if untreated, could lead to permanent vision damage. PTI MNAs have filed a petition before the Islamabad High Court seeking permission to meet Imran and monitor his medical condition.
Before the confirmation, Imranโs sister, Noreen Niazi, raised concerns over the lack of communication with the family and lawyers regarding his treatment. She demanded that his full medical reports be made public, stating, โTo endanger his health is nothing less than an attempt to blind the entire country.โ
Niazi also warned that any harm to Imranโs eye would have serious repercussions and insisted on family access to his medical records and treatment updates.
Authorities confirmed that the procedure was carried out under strict security, with PIMS operation theatres cordoned off during the treatment. Officials described the procedure as routine and successful, with no complications reported.
