Second hospital visit under tight security
ISLAMABAD: The founder of PTI, Imran Khan,ย was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad early Tuesday morning for a scheduled follow-up treatment of his right eye.
The administration shifted Khan to PIMS from Adiala Jail under heightened security for his second hospital visit after previous checkups in January.
Doctors had earlier recommended three injections as part of ongoing treatment. During the brief visit, which lasted about an hour, specialists examined his eye while cardiologists also assessed his heart. Hospital officials said echocardiography and an electrocardiogram showed normal cardiac function.
Before the procedure, a medical board conducted a detailed evaluation. Subsequently, he received a second anti-VEGF intravitreal injection in an operating theatre under standard protocols. The procedure was carried out jointly by consultants from PIMS and Shifa International Eye Hospital. Authorities confirmed informed consent was obtained before treatment.
Health concerns fuel political tensions
According to a statement, the intervention was performed as day-care surgery, allowing discharge later the same day. Doctors reported stable vitals throughout the procedure and recovery. He was released with follow-up instructions and is expected to receive the third injection on March 23.
Meanwhile, a report submitted to the Supreme Court of Pakistan revealed that Khan suffers from central retinal vein occlusion, a condition often linked to cardiovascular risks. The report, presented by lawyer Salman Safdar, also stated he has lost significant vision in his right eye.
Khan, jailed since August 2023, denies wrongdoing in multiple cases. His incarceration continues to trigger political friction as PTI supporters stage protests across key regions.
