PTI Founder Argues Lack of Evidence, Seeks Reversal of LHC Decision
ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister and founding chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Lahore High Courtโs (LHC) decision to cancel his bail in the May 9 riots case. The petition urges the apex court to declare the LHCโs ruling null and void, arguing that the accusations against Khan are unfounded and not supported by evidence.
The plea asserts that Khan had no role in the May 9 incidents, which involved violent protests across the country following his arrest. It emphasizes that he was in the custody of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) at the time of the unrest, making it impossible for him to participate or facilitate any unlawful activity.
The petition also highlights inconsistencies in the prosecutionโs statements, arguing that these contradictions cast serious doubt on the credibility of the case. It further points out that other individuals accused in the same case have been granted bail, reinforcing the argument that Imran Khan, too, is entitled to the same legal treatment.
Allegations of Malice and Weak Evidence Raised by Defense
Khanโs legal team argues that the delay in police action and the decision not to arrest him for five months demonstrate bad faith on the part of the authorities. According to the petition, the prosecutionโs delayed statements are unreliable, and the overall evidence presented is insufficient to justify the cancellation of bail.
The petition accuses the police of acting with malice and calls for a fresh and thorough investigation into the case. It underscores the absence of direct evidence linking the PTI founder to any criminal activity related to the May 9 events.
It is important to note that the Lahore High Court had earlier dismissed multiple bail applications filed by Imran Khan in connection with the same case.
