ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday granted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan permission to meet his family, consult with his lawyers, and make WhatsApp calls to his sons, Sulaiman Khan and Qasim Khan.
Court Orders on Family Access
The decision came after Imran Khan’s lawyer, Faisal Chaudhry, submitted a request for allowing family meetings and communication with his sons via WhatsApp calls. The court directed jail authorities to facilitate these arrangements and ensure Khan’s access to his family as per legal provisions.
During the hearing, the court also questioned the process for arranging meetings between Khan and his convicted wife, Bushra Bibi. The deputy superintendent of Adiala Jail explained that such meetings could take place within the prison.
Faisal Chaudhry pointed out that despite a previous court order, the jail authorities had not allowed Khan to meet his family or make WhatsApp calls to his children. The court instructed the jail officials to consult the jail superintendent and ensure compliance with its directives.
Petition on Jail Conditions
The court hearing was adjourned until January 27, but it also took note of a petition filed by Khan’s lawyer, Faisal Farid Chaudhry, seeking improved jail conditions for the PTI founder.
The petition highlighted issues regarding Khan’s treatment in custody and alleged non-compliance with legal protocols. It called for measures to prevent the misuse of court orders and requested enforcement of his legal rights under Pakistan Jail Rules 1978.
The petition further requested:
- Weekly telephonic conversations between Imran Khan and his children.
- Access to reading materials, including books and newspapers.
- Weekly meetings with his family members and legal team.
The Islamabad High Court’s orders are expected to address these grievances and ensure that Khan’s rights are upheld during his detention.
