Two-ball policy revised in ODIs; concussion substitute rules updated for Tests
DUBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced significant changes to the playing conditions for One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Test matches, with the new regulations set to take effect in the coming weeks.
ODI Rule Change: Two Balls Until 34th Over Only
Starting July 2, the longstanding two-ball policy in ODIs will be modified. Under the updated rule, two new balls will be used only until the end of the 34th over. From the 35th over onwards, only one of the balls will continue to be used until the end of the innings.
This marks the end of the current rule that allows the use of two balls alternately throughout the full 50 overs of an ODI innings.
Test Matches: Pre-Named Concussion Substitutes Required
In Test cricket, a new rule will come into effect from June 17, requiring teams to pre-name concussion substitutes before the start of a match.
Teams must list these substitutes along with their designated playing roles โ such as batter, fast bowler, spinner, or wicketkeeper โ to ensure clarity in case a concussion replacement is needed during the game.
The ICC stated the changes aim to enhance fairness, player safety, and the overall balance of the game.
