An Indian Air Force (IAF) team has arrived in Pampore, a town in the Pulwama district of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), to collect and remove the debris of a downed aircraft, which was reportedly shot down by Pakistan in recent cross-border hostilities.
The development was confirmed in a report published by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), which highlighted the sensitive nature of the operation and the tense atmosphere prevailing in the region.
According to the BBC, bulldozers and other heavy machinery are being used to gather and transport the scattered wreckage from various locations around Pampore. The area has been secured by Indian security forces, who have erected physical barriers and sealed off access to the crash site to prevent interference and ensure the safety of the ongoing recovery operations.
BBC correspondent Riaz Masroor, reporting from the scene, stated that several residents described hearing a thunderous explosion followed by the sound of jet aircraft, just before debris rained down on the town.
Fragments of the wreckage reportedly landed in multiple neighborhoods, raising alarms and prompting a swift response from both the military and emergency services.
While the Indian authorities have not officially confirmed the type or origin of the aircraft, the wreckage is being closely examined by another IAF team that has also reached the site. Analysts suggest the lack of immediate identification may be due to the extent of the damage or the sensitivity surrounding the incident in light of the escalating military conflict between India and Pakistan.
The BBC also noted the symbolic significance of Pampore as it lies in close proximity to the site of the deadly 2019 Pulwama suicide bombing, which claimed the lives of over 40 Indian paramilitary personnel and became a flashpoint in India-Pakistan relations.
The recent aircraft downing and recovery efforts have further heightened tensions, as both nations engage in a war of narratives and counterclaims amid rising military activity across the Line of Control.
Local residents, while cooperating with the authorities, remain deeply concerned over the renewed escalation and fear a repeat of past hostilities. The international community, meanwhile, continues to urge restraint and dialogue to avoid further deterioration of peace and stability in the region.
