Authorities have confirmed the discovery of human remains amid ongoing bushfires in southeastern Australia. The fires have burned uncontrollably for days during extreme summer heat.
As conditions worsened, flames destroyed buildings and cut electricity to thousands of homes. Large areas of bushland have also been reduced to ash.
Human Remains Found Near Fire-Affected Town
Police reported that human remains were found near a vehicle close to the town of Longwood. The area lies around 110 kilometres north of Melbourne.
However, officials have not yet identified the victim. Investigations remain ongoing as fire conditions continue to pose challenges.
Meanwhile, the Longwood fire ranks among the largest still burning. It has already destroyed homes, vineyards, and agricultural land.
Scale of Destruction Continues to Grow
Since midweek, fires have scorched more than 860,000 acres across Victoria. Over 300 structures have been destroyed, including residential properties.
As a result, thousands of residents remain without power. Emergency services continue working to restore essential services.
Authorities described the situation as the most severe since the 2019–2020 Black Summer fires. Those fires killed 33 people and devastated vast regions.
Multiple Fires Burn Across Victoria and Beyond
More than 30 active fires are currently burning across Victoria. Several fires near the border with New South Wales have reached the highest danger level.
Fire officials warned that containment could take weeks. Weather conditions remain a major concern for firefighters.
Officials also warned that hot, dry, and windy weather may return. Such conditions could further intensify the fires.
Total Fire Ban and Air Quality Warnings Issued
A total fire ban has been imposed across Victoria. Thousands of firefighters and more than 70 aircraft are battling the blazes.
At the same time, bushfire smoke has degraded air quality in many regions. Metropolitan Melbourne has also been affected.
Residents have been advised to limit outdoor activity. Health officials continue monitoring pollution levels closely.
Federal Government Announces Emergency Support
The federal government has announced emergency financial assistance for affected residents. Farmers will also receive support for livestock feed distribution.
Officials estimate that thousands of cattle may have been impacted. Emergency measures aim to reduce immediate losses.
Authorities continue urging residents to follow evacuation orders. Safety remains the highest priority as the crisis unfolds.
