Heavy rainfall has been forecast across several districts of Azad Kashmir over the next 12 to 24 hours, prompting the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to issue an alert. The authority has warned of potential flooding and landslides due to the expected intensity of showers.
According to an NDMA spokesperson, heavy rain is likely to lash Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Bagh, Sharda, Haveli, and Kotli. These areas, already prone to natural hazards, may face flooding in urban centers and low-lying regions, while landslides pose a threat in the mountainous terrain. The situation could lead to road blockages, disruption of transport, and possible damage to infrastructure.
Residents living close to rivers, streams, and low-lying settlements have been urged to remain vigilant. Authorities caution that a sudden rise in water levels could endanger lives and property.
The NDMA has directed the public to avoid unnecessary movement near vulnerable sites and follow official safety instructions. Precautionary measures such as storing essential supplies, securing belongings, and keeping communication devices charged have also been advised.
In addition, the NDMA has instructed local administrations and disaster management units to stay on high alert and prepare emergency response mechanisms.
Rescue teams have been advised to remain on standby in case of evacuations or relief operations. Coordination with health, police, and municipal departments has also been emphasized to ensure a swift response to any emergency.
While heavy rains bring much-needed water to the region, the associated risks of flash floods and landslides remain significant. The NDMA has stressed that public cooperation with safety guidelines is crucial to minimizing risks during this period. People have been reminded to stay away from water channels, unstable slopes, and to immediately report emergencies to the relevant authorities.
