The heavy rain forecast issued by the Meteorological Department warns of persistent showers across the country through July 25, followed by a new monsoon spell from July 28. This heavy rain forecast includes widespread light to moderate rainfall in various provinces and increased chances of flash flooding in vulnerable areas.
According to the Met Office, rain in Sindh, including Karachi, will persist until July 20. Balochistan will experience showers through July 23, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) is likely to see rainfall between July 21 and 25. Meanwhile, Punjab will remain under cloudy conditions with intermittent showers from July 20 to 25. The heavy rain forecast indicates that northeastern Punjab, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Kashmir, and KP may face waterlogging and rising river levels.
The department has issued warnings regarding possible flooding in local rivers, canals, and urban drainage systems, particularly in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and northern regions. There is also a notable risk of landslides in Murree, Galiyat, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, triggered by continuous rainfall under the heavy rain forecast.
No Cloudburst Recorded During Current Heavy Rain Forecast
Dispelling social media rumors, Met Department Director Anjum Nazir Zaigham clarified that no cloudburst events have taken place during this heavy rain forecast. โThereโs no sign of a cloudburst in any region of Pakistan, including Karachi,โ he said in an interview.
Zaigham added that cloudbursts are extreme weather phenomena confined to mountainous terrain, involving over 100mm of rainfall in just an hour. While some moderate rain with thunder is expected in Sindh in the coming days, heavier rainfall in Karachi is projected to begin next month under the new monsoon spell.
New Monsoon Spell Expected From July 28
The latest weather models show a new monsoon spell forming over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to influence Pakistanโs weather starting July 28. Zaigham said, โThis new monsoon spell will bring substantial rainfall, especially to Karachi and southern parts of the country.โ
Citizens are urged to remain cautious in low-lying areas and follow local administration advisories as the heavy rain forecast continues and the next monsoon spell approaches. The Meteorological Department has recommended emergency preparedness measures to manage any potential disruptions.
