ISLAMABAD: Three leading institutes — the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), the National University of Technology (NUTECH), and COMSATS University — are going to set up their campuses in Karachi, marking a significant boost to the city’s higher education landscape.
Federal Minister for Education, Science, and Technology Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui approved the initiative in line with the prime minister’s vision to expand access to quality education, which is vital for the country’s economic development, according to a press release from the education ministry.
Comsats University will initially operate from a temporary campus on Hub Road, while a Rs4.6 billion PC-1 proposal has been submitted for a permanent campus. However, the ministry has not yet shared further details about the NUST and NUTECH campuses.
Dr Siddiqui, who hails from Karachi and also chairs the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan, emphasized that these campuses will provide greater educational opportunities for local students.
Comsats University currently operates seven campuses across Pakistan, including in Islamabad, Lahore, Wah, and Abbottabad. Previous attempts to establish campuses in Sukkur, Gujar Khan, and Dera Murad Jamali were unsuccessful.
This move follows the recent inauguration of the Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design (PIFD) campus in Karachi, alongside plans to open a National College of Arts (NCA) campus in the city.
